--- title: Self-Hosted PostgreSQL sidebarTitle: Self-Hosted PostgreSQL description: Run ParadeDB in a self-managed Postgres cluster canonical: https://www.paradedb.com/docs/operate/deploy/self-hosted/extension --- If you already manage your own Postgres cluster, the simplest way to adopt ParadeDB is to install the extension directly in your cluster. ## Prerequisites Ensure that you have superuser access to the Postgres database. As of `0.25.0`, `pg_search` relies on [`pgvector`](https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector)'s `vector` type, making it a required extension. Follow the [`pgvector` installation instructions](https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector?tab=readme-ov-file#installation) to install it on the server before installing `pg_search`. ## Installing the ParadeDB Postgres Extension ParadeDB provides prebuilt binaries of our extension for Postgres 15+ on: - Debian 12 (Bookworm) and 13 (Trixie) - Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) and 26.04 (Resolute) - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and 10 - macOS 15 (Sequoia) and 26 (Tahoe) - macOS via [Postgres.app](https://postgresapp.com/extensions/) (Postgres 18 only) The prebuilt releases can be found in [GitHub Releases](https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases). To request access to prebuilt binaries for ParadeDB Enterprise, [contact sales](mailto:sales@paradedb.com). Packages are available for `amd64` and `arm64`. Adjust the ParadeDB version, Postgres major version, and architecture in the download URL to match your setup. ```bash Debian 12 curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/postgresql-18-pg-search_0.26.0-1PARADEDB-bookworm_amd64.deb" -o /tmp/pg_search.deb sudo apt-get install -y /tmp/*.deb ``` ```bash Debian 13 curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/postgresql-18-pg-search_0.26.0-1PARADEDB-trixie_amd64.deb" -o /tmp/pg_search.deb sudo apt-get install -y /tmp/*.deb ``` Packages are available for `amd64` and `arm64`. Adjust the ParadeDB version, Postgres major version, and architecture in the download URL to match your setup. ```bash RHEL 9 curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/pg_search_18-0.26.0-1PARADEDB.el9.x86_64.rpm" -o /tmp/pg_search.rpm sudo dnf install -y /tmp/*.rpm ``` ```bash RHEL 10 curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/pg_search_18-0.26.0-1PARADEDB.el10.x86_64.rpm" -o /tmp/pg_search.rpm sudo dnf install -y /tmp/*.rpm ``` Packages are available for Apple Silicon (`arm64`) only. Adjust the ParadeDB version and Postgres major version in the download URL to match your setup. ```bash macOS 15 (Sequoia) curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/pg_search@18--0.26.0.arm64_sequoia.pkg" -o ~/Downloads/pg_search.pkg sudo installer -pkg ~/Downloads/pg_search.pkg -target / ``` ```bash macOS 26 (Tahoe) curl -L "https://github.com/paradedb/paradedb/releases/download/v0.26.0/pg_search@18--0.26.0.arm64_tahoe.pkg" -o ~/Downloads/pg_search.pkg sudo installer -pkg ~/Downloads/pg_search.pkg -target / ``` ## Updating `postgresql.conf` Next, add the extension to `shared_preload_libraries` in `postgresql.conf`. ```ini shared_preload_libraries = 'pg_search' ``` Restart the Postgres server for these changes to take effect. ## Loading the Extension Finally, connect to your Postgres database and run the following command: `pg_search` requires [`pgvector`](https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector). `CASCADE` enables it in the database if it is not already enabled. ```sql CREATE EXTENSION pg_search CASCADE; ```
